    Deep Creek Preserve Guided Walks
Through reservation, groups are taking on an interpretive guided hike through a vital upland habitat. This 2,000 acre preserve was purchased by SWFWMD to protect and enhance water quality of the Peace River. Bought with tax-dollars, this is a public preserve, open to hiking, horseback riding, and biking. The Preserve was bought for many reasons, one of which is the Red Cockaded Woodpecker. The essential long-leaf pine grows in the Preserve and it is the hope of the wildlife managers that soon the RCW will move into artificial nesting boxes, and eventually into the trees themselves. Many, many other species of birds have been sighted here: egrets, herons, red-bellied woodpecker, sand hill cranes, pileated woodpecker, warblers (yellow- rumped to name one...). Not only birds but deer, hog tracks, gopher tortoises and the occasional bobcat have been spotted.

    Manatees
The West Indian or "Florida" manatee has a large, bulky, rounded body that tapers into a round, paddle-like tail. Its two front flippers help the animal maneuver in the water and move food towards its mouth. Its gray skin is think and wrinkly, and it has powerful lips which dig for food. The manatee can grow from 9-13 feet long and weigh up to 3000 pounds. They rely completely on plants for their food source, consuming up to 150 pounds per day.

You can actually see manatees swimming in the local areas at different locations.

While they look rather slow, they can definitely hurt you if should startle one.

For your own safety and the safety of the manatees, keep these guidelines in mind:

Do not enter designated manatee sanctuaries for any reason
?Look, but don?t touch? -- observe manatees from the surface of the water and at a distance
    Avoid excessive noise and splashing
Use snorkel gear when attempting to watch manatees -- the sound of scuba gear may cause them to leave the area
Don?t feed manatees or give them water

    Tarpon News

Tarpon remain the focus of many nearshore fishermen right now. Good tidal flow this week should have the fish in a heavy feeding mode as they prepare to make their runs offshore to spawn. These prespawn fish can be the biggest of the year as the females are laden with fully hydrated eggs. A 210-pounder was weighed in an all-release tournament by Marty Scott and his team in Boca Grande last Sunday.

    Safety Tips for the Beach
    • Swim near a lifeguard
    • Learn to swim

    • Never swim alone

    • Supervise children closely, even when lifeguards are present

    • Don't rely on floation devices, such as rafts, you may lose them in the water

    • If caught in a rip current, swim sideways until free, don't swim against the current's pull

    • Alcohol and swimming don't mix

    • Protect your head, neck, and spine -- don't dive into unfamiliar waters -- feet first, first time

    • If you are in trouble, call or wave for help

    • Follow regulations and lifeguard directions

    • Swim parallel to shore if you wish to swim long distances

    • Scuba dive only if trained and certified -- and within the limits of your training

    • No glass containers at the beach -- broken glass and bare feet don't mix

    • No beach fires except in designated areas -- fire residue and superheated sand can severely burn bare feet -- use a barbeque that is elevated off the sand

    • Report hazardous conditions to lifeguards or other beach management personnel

    Bathing Suit History

Originally bathing suits covered EVERYTHING. White skin untouched by the sun was considered all the rage. No doubt this made swimming difficult at best. Imagine what the wearers of these "bathing suits" would think if they visited Englewood Beach today!

Englewood Beach Weather for the weekend

Looks like rain for the weekend, and while that's not great for beach activities, it will lower the risk of fires that the county is experiencing.

This weekend will be a good time to check out the latest movies at the cinema, dine out, shop or visit any of the many local museums found in Sarasota, Tampa or Fort Myers.

    New Fishing Regulations take affect

The new regulations require the use of circle hooks, venting tools and dehooking devices for anglers pursuing reef fish while using any live or dead natural bait. Circle hooks are being mandated because they are less likely than j-hooks to deeply hook most fish. Venting tools are mandated because fish caught in deep water sometimes swell up when brought to the surface and are unable to return to the depths unless deflated. Dehooking tools are being required because it is thought that such tools allow for fish to be more efficiently released with less handling, therefore increasing survival rates. The federal regulations can be viewed at http://sero.nmfs.noaa.gov/. Florida's version can be viewed at http://myfwc.com/marine/GearRules/index.htm.

    Alligator Safety

If you are thinking about any activity that takes you near fresh water such as rivers, ponds, lakes or canals, you should really educate yourself about Alligator safety.

Alligators are predators, and can grow up to 14 feet long and 1,000 pounds. Because of their large size, problems between alligators and humans can arise. Between 1948 and 2004, the FWC has documented 242 unprovoked alligator attacks on humans, of which 15 were fatal.

The danger of being injured by a provoked alligator is much higher than by an unprovoked one so your primary means of defense is to leave alligators alone. Though not intentional, throwing scraps in the water at fish camps and boat ramps is still feeding alligators so make sure to always dispose of your fish scraps in a garbage can.

Alligators are more active at night or at dawn or dusk. At these times they are more likely to be feeding than during the heat of midday. It is therefore safer to swim or fish only during the day. Additionally, Alligators are most active during the summer months. Since this is the time of year when people are also likely to be in the water, areas known to contain alligators should be avoided.

Never allow pets or small children to be near the water where there are known to be alligators as they could be mistaken for prey.

If you should be bitten by an alligator, seek medical attention immediately as the environment where they live tends to be high in bacteria.

Attacks are VERY rare in general and by using common sense and following guidelines, you can easily stay safe.

    Dolphin Fishing

Not to worry, Flipper is safe - "dolphin fishing" refers to a species of fish (see below) also known as Mahi-mahi. I've noticed when in the presence of "visitors" they tend to be a little horrified by the term, so I thought we might explain this.

There is not much information on why they are actually called Dolphin fish, though they do swim in pods and can grow quite large.

A dolphin fish can grow about 80 pounds and live only about five years. The dolphin?s coloring can range from a dark blue along its back and changes to green ? gold ? yellow color spectrum as look from their back to their belly.

There are actually many dolphins living in the coastal waters off englewood beach and the venice area. Some are known by name and beg fish from fishermen. They rarely seem even slightly bothered by humans, but it is not advisable to attempt to touch them.

Salt water or Fresh Water Fishing on Manasota Key and in Englewood.

Fishing is one of the major past times of many of the locals.

This area offers a wide variety of fish to be caught, both salt water and fresh water.

The area offers many fresh water locations including the Mayakka River and more.

Salt water fishing can be done directly on any of beaches of Manasota Key.

Ideally, a family or a couple can plan days of their vacation where one or both fish while the other persues their interests.
There are many charters for rent or hire in the area that provide an excellent fishing experience that can be the highlight of your vacation.

Learn more about the fish you can catch and state regulations here at: Manasota Key Fishing

Instead of day tripping here from more expensive locations, you should find an Englewood Beach House Rental and day trip to the more costlier locations.

What you save could very well enable you to do even MORE on your next Florida vacation!

    Recreational Sea Shell Collecting Information
The following is a summary of regulations regarding the recreational collection of sea shells in Florida.

Depending on whether or not the harvested sea shell contains a living organism, the type of organism it contains and where you will be collecting, the recreational collection of sea shells is permitted. A valid commercial saltwater products license is required in order sell shells containing live organisms.

License Requirement: A Florida recreational saltwater fishing license (resident or non-resident, whichever is applicable) is required in order to harvest a sea shell containing a living organism.
Closed and Restricted Areas: In Lee County, you may not harvest or possess any shells that contain a live organism except for oysters, hard clams, sunray venus clams and coquinas.
In Manatee County, you may not harvest or possess more than two shells containing live organisms of any single species except for oysters, hard clams, sunray venus clams and coquinas.
Also, the harvest of certain species may be limited or prohibited in state or federal parks, national wildlife refuges, and portions of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Interested persons should contact those park areas for further information.
Prohibited Species: All harvest of the Bahama Starfish (Oreaster reticulatis) is prohibited. Possession of live Queen Conch (Strombus gigas) at any time is prohibited. It is not unlawful to possess queen conch shells in Florida as long as the shells do not contain any living queen conch at the time of collection, and so long as a living queen conch is not killed, mutilated, or removed from its shell prior to collection. Possession of conch meat or a queen conch shell having an off-center hole larger than 1/16 inch in diameter through its spire is prohibited.

Bag Limit: In counties other than Lee and Manatee, you are only permitted to keep an aggregate of 20 Marine Life species per person per day.

For unregulated species, more than 100 pounds or 2 fish per person per day (whichever is greater) is considered commercial quantities and requires a saltwater products license.

Looks like a beautiful beach weekend!

Don't be misled by the chance of rain - Florida actually gets rain almost daily for a short period of time when it is the rainy season. It never (or actually VERY rarely rains in winter), however during late late spring and summer it rains daily. Rains are short, though can drop a good bit of rain.

The "average" time of day for rain is late afternoon.

Additionally, you will want to catch:

    Sunburn
Obviously the best way to treat sunburn is to avoid it - via use of sun screen, wearing clothing that covers the maximum amount of skin, etc. In the event that you still wind up with a painful sunburn, the following tips can help:

    1) Aloe Vera products - make sure that Aloe is one of the top ingredients and check the date as this can expire.

    2) Acetaminaphin or Ibuprofin can help with the swelling and discomfort.

    3) Drink EXTRA fluids as your skin is actually dehyrdrated and this will help with the pain.

    4) Cool or cold compresses will also help.

    This weekend on Englewood Beach
Looks like a beautiful weekend for all and any beach actvities. Englewood Beach offers a wide variety of things you can easily (and for low cost) do at any given time. A scenic drive or bike ride through the canopy - closer to the further end of the island, a picnic lunch at any of the beaches, (all offer tables, some offer grills) or your nomal swimming, sleeping, or shelling kind of day.

It's still EARLY in the summer, but don't forget the sunblock! I have seen more sun burned people lately then I have for quite awhile. The cooler, not quite summer yet weather has lulled people into thinking they won't get a painful sunburn - think again!

It is Mother's Day this wekeend - take mom out for lunch at the Lock and Key or any of the other local restaurants on the key - we're sure she'll love it!

  • All Beach Rentals are Not Created Equal... - 07-05-2008
Planning your beach house rental should be given priority when planning your Englewood Beach vacation. This is where you will sleep, eat and rest in between activities so care should be used.

If you have never rented a beach house before, you need to know what questions to ask when calling rentals so that you know if the price is fair and what you will need to provide for your stay.

Here are a list of reasonable questions to ask when considering your options:

    1) Is the beach house ON the beach or simply in near proximity to the beach? Note: Some rentals are listed as beach houses, when in fact they are blocks away from the beach or across the street from private beaches which do not allow you access.

    2) Find out what local activities are available to you and your family by asking, or better yet by visiting a website custom made to provide you with such information.

    3) What sort of kitchen is provided? Some rentals have no kitchen, others the bare minimum and some have a fully stocked kitchen complete with appliances such as a coffee maker.

    4) Are bed linens and towels included in the rental and if so, are they changed during your stay?

    5) Is the rental cleaned between rentals?

    6) What are the check out/check in times? You will want to plan your arrival for as close to check in time as possible to avoid uncomfortable waiting around time.

    7) How many persons allowed per unit? Are guests allowed? Pets?

    8) What amentities are included with the rental? Beach chairs, grills, etc.

You should have a list of expectations so that you can formulate questions that relate specifically to you and your family's needs - such as if you have a toddler you will not want to be walking up and down steep stairs, or is the rental wheel chair accessible if need be.

A little research will go a long way towards making your vacation the one you dreamed of having.

    Englewood Beach Fishing News
2008 - Year of the cobia?
    By Capt. Ralph Allen

Sometimes fishing is great and sometimes ?You should have been here yesterday? stories abound. Angling success goes in cycles as the populations of various species rise and fall. Sometimes the fluctuations in the numbers of fish are in response to natural events such as red tides or cold weather, either of which can kill large numbers of animals. Sometimes fish fluctuations are in response to human affairs that can either be immediate, as in a chemical spill or some other disaster, or more long term like over harvest of a particular fish, and sometimes fish numbers go way up or way down for reasons we never understand.

A perfect example of this last scenario is playing out right now in the waters of southwest Florida where anglers are finding more cobia than have been seen in a number of years. And while we may not understand why this is a strong cobia year, no one is complaining about the unexplained abundance of these popular fish.

Big fish are on the prowl
    By Capt. Rod Walinchus
This is the time of year when some truly huge fish are found cruising our waters ? cobia, tarpon, over-sized redfish, giant jacks and trophy snook. It?s only a matter of time before something big decides to eat a fly meant for something else.

Most anglers aren?t prepared for an encounter with giant fish simply because they lack experience with them. Truly large fish can humble an angler in a heartbeat with their explosive reaction to a hookset, uncontrollable speed and unstoppable power. However, the fish doesn?t have to win the battle every time, especially if we can prepare ourselves for the battle.

You can now find an easy to use map of Manasota Key. While Manasota Key is a small island, it is always good to know where you are going!

The weather this coming weeks look partly cloudy, but beautiful so a trip to the beach would be a great idea.

    In local news:

The Englewood Area Fire Control District is celebrating the 25th year of their incorporation. It was a long, hard battle getting a fire department established here in Englewood, an even harder battle building it into the fire control district it is today.

Sixty years ago some locals were of the opinion, ?We have always had fires around here and they usually burn themselves out, so why do we need a fire department??

The Englewood Area Fire Control District is unique because it covers two counties. Starting at the north part of Englewood it goes all the way to Placida, Rotonda and Englewood East covering 83 square miles.

When you are out and about this weekend - don't forget the sun block!
